Reviewed in Booklist (June, 2003) and received a
Starred review. |
This novel by the award-winning author, Charles
Sobczak, tells the story of the romance and marriage between Ayse Yalcin, a Muslim, and Daniel Harris, a Christian. The
conflict is immediate and profound.
Daniel Harris is the son of Clayton Harris, a Southern Baptist
minister from Macon, Georgia, while Ayse Yalcin is the daughter
of a devout Islamic family from Istanbul, Turkey. Both of
their respective families disapprove of the pairing from the
moment they meet while attending Oglethorpe University.
After the rebellious couple elope during Easter break in
Gatlinburg, Tennessee, Daniel's father disowns him. What
follows is a tale of tears, madness and ultimately, redemption.
It is a modern retelling of an age old tale - the story
of Romeo and Juliet. Set in Atlanta, Georgia and Istanbul,
Turkey, this novel explores the long-standing conflict between
Islam and Christianity through the eyes of two innocent young
lovers. The author began working on the book in 2000 and
traveled to Istanbul in May of 2001 to get a feel for that
ancient city. He started writing the first draft on August
13th, 2001. The relevance of this tale has increased
tenfold from that portentous date. This is a book that
will be as certain to inspire as to spark heated debate.
It is a story of religious intolerance, pride and forgiveness.
It is a love story - for love is... the
choice of Angels.
